Biofuel From E. Coli?
Scientists at UC-Berkeley have incorporated new genes into the genetic code of Escherichia coli, allowing it to produce biodiesel. Even more exciting, the researchers have also incorporated genes that allow E. coli to secrete enzymes that break down cellulose, specifically hemicellulose, and produce the sugar needed to fuel this process. While this is an exciting breakthrough, the process is not yet very efficient.
