Although KAMS is currently included in proposals for Kansas’ FY2010 budget, we need your support once again to ensure that KAMS stays in the budget.
All it takes is writing, emailing, or calling your state senator and state representative to express your support for KAMS and ask for theirs too! We have several letters for you to pick from, if you’re not sure how to express your support. Those letters are available here under the Subpage Heading on the right.
If you don’t know who your state senator or representative is you can look it up here and this webpage will direct you to their name, office number, phone number, and email address.
If you also would like to express your support of KAMS to Governor Sebelius, you may email her via the state of Kansas website here. You may also access the Governor’s address and phone number here.

Many of you have been wondering about the state of funding for KAMS and we do have an update for you. Funding for KAMS in Fiscal Year 2009 was included in the budget bill signed by Governor Sebelius last week. Like many state agencies, KAMS’ FY2009 budget was cut by 4.5%.
Last week the Kansas Legislature began working on the budget for Fiscal Year 2010, which begins July 1, 2009. Funding for KAMS in FY2010 has been included in initial committee-level budget meetings. While funding for KAMS in FY2010 will include significant cuts, we have planned for the cuts in such a way as to preserve as much as possible of the initial vision for KAMS.
We are certain that the inclusion of KAMS in the FY2009 budget was only made possible by the vocal support of those who believe in KAMS and our mission. Although KAMS is currently included in proposals for Kansas’ FY2010 budget, we need your support once again to ensure that KAMS is not left out of the budget process for FY2010.
All it takes is writing, emailing, or calling your state senator and state representative to express your support for KAMS and ask for theirs too! We have several letters for you to pick from, if you’re not sure how to express your support. Those letters are available here under the Subpage Heading on the right.

Many of you have been asking whether anything is certain yet regarding the FY2009 budget for KAMS. Unfortunately, like most state agencies, we are still in a holding pattern. The FY2009 buget recently passed by the Kansas House and Senate has yet to be signed into law by Governor Sebelius and, until it is, we cannot announce anything regarding the KAMS budget.
The good news is that we have been authorized by President Hammond to begin the review of applications for those applying to KAMS for the 2009-2010 school year & to schedule interviews with prospective students once the initial review is completed. The review of applications begins this week with interviews likely scheduled in early March.
Please continue to check the blog for the latest updates on KAMS & for other more general information that may be of interest to those of you following KAMS. Rest assured that once we have information we can pass along about the FY2009 budget we will provide that information to you via the KAMS blog.

KAMS Needs Your Support!
Many of you rallied to our support in November when Governor Sebelius’ budget office first recommended that funding for KAMS be eliminated and we truly thank you for that support. But, we need your help again. KAMS strongly encourages you to contact your state senators and state representatives and to ask them to preserve enough funding for KAMS in the state budget so that the program is not delayed.

Unfortunately, as expected, Governor Sebelius recommended in her budget proposal released this morning that the funding for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science be cut for both FY 2009 and FY 2010 and the program be delayed. This recommendation by the Governor was expected by KAMS given the suggestions by the Governor’s budget office in November.
Although the Governor has recommended KAMS’ funding be cut and the Academy delayed, the Kansas Legislature still must approve any cuts to the state budget. At this time KAMS implores you for your help in contacting your state senators and representatives and asking them to preserve enough funding for KAMS so that the program is not delayed.
