Welcome to KAMS!

Welcome to the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science Blog!

The Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) is off and running. The program was created by the legislature with senate bill 139. Proposals were made by a number of universities to be the host for the academy and Fort Hays State University was selected.

A director for the academy was named August 1st and we have been very busy since that time. We have been working to put in place the steps to make the academy a reality.

We have made and are making the necessary hires for the academy. We are currently in the process of recruiting our historic first KAMS class. In August of the 2009 school year, 48 students will descend of FHSU to begin a rigorous curriculum of 72 college credit hours during their junior and senior years of high school. The students will live in residence at the university in the KAMS community. This will be a close-knit, supportive community that will be the state’s premier academic program for high school students.

The KAMS staff will work closely with the students, the parents, and representatives from the sending school as the students work for completion of the KAMS program and graduation from their home school. We will also work in harmony with the legislature, the Board of Regents, the Kansas Department of Education, and other key stakeholders as these students progress through this spectacular program for our state’s best and brightest.

We will develop our state’s future mathematics and science leaders. This education for our young leaders will be crucial for Kansas as we work together to ensure the long-term economic prosperity of the state.
