Update from the KAMS Director

KAMS Director Update

As many of you may have read, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ budget office has recommended cutting funding for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science. We understand with the bleak financial future facing both the United States as a whole and the state of Kansas in particular that the budget cuts are inevitable and necessary for the economic health of the entire state. Here at KAMS, we are working on potential solutions, but we cannot guarantee that our initial vision for KAMS will be realized. We hope to preserve KAMS so that when better economic times come, as they eventually will, that we will be able to function fully as intended when KAMS was created.

There is a great deal of interest in the Academy with 15 applications currently in with a deadline of January 20th for submission of applications. As many of you know, we have a KAMS “Preview Day” coming up on Saturday, December 6th. At this writing, we have 150 registered to attend this fantastic day with 45 of that total being potential students.

We have to be conservative in our planning for the Academy’s future. We know that we will probably be impacted with funding shortfalls which would mean that, if we are not fully funded, we likely will not be able to fund textbooks totaling $750-900 per academic year. This responsibility will be shifted to the student. The base per pupil’s state aid will still be transferred to KAMS from the sending school. As we know, tuition to attend schools of higher education will also increase in the state and we do not have a way to fund that increase. Therefore, that percent of tuition increase would need to be the responsibility of the student. We are committed to providing the tablet computers for each student.

We at the Academy remain hopeful and are still totally convinced that this opportunity for students is the state’s premier education program for our state’s best and brightest students. Thanks for all of your initial and continued support. We are working very hard to ensure that the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science will be a reality in August of 2009.

We strongly encourage you to voice any support for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science you might have to your State Senator, Representative, or Governor Sebelius. People need to know, as you and we do, the importance of the Academy to our state’s students and the future economic well being of the state of Kansas. We are not only extremely short in the supply of mathematics and science instructors in our schools, but also need to develop our states’ next chemists, physicists, biologists, bio-scientists, etc. KAMS would be one avenue to assist in the development of these individuals. We need your support!!
