Pondering the Future with Chimps?
Recently, researchers reported observing Santino, a chimpanzee in the Furuvik Zoo in Sweden, engaging in planning behavior. Santino was observed gathering & storing stones and knocking off bits of concrete in the morning. Later in the day, he hurtled those weapons at zoo visitors.
“These observations convincingly show that our fellow apes do consider the future in a very complex way,” said the author Mathias Osvath, a Lund University PhD student. “It implies that they have a highly developed consciousness, including lifelike mental simulations of potential events.” For more information, see the Associated Press article here.
