Luke, I am Killing Your Mosquitoes
Some of the astrophysicists who worked on the Reagan-era “Star Wars” missile defense system have taken similar technology in a whole new direction. The team, led by Dr. Jordin Kare from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has developed a laser gun that is able to detect the audio frequency created by the beating of mosquito wings and then fire, potentially destroying millions in minutes. It would even be able to detect between those mosquitoes that feed on people and those that do not, reducing the potential for malaria. Kare suggests that these lasers could be mounted to create a “fence” around buildings or entire towns. For more information, see CNN here.
