Pattern of Severe Droughts in Africa

droughtA recent study by climate researchers reports a pattern of severe droughts in Africa.  Droughts occur regularly every 30-65 years, but there is also evidence of droughts that can last for centuries.  The most recent case of these centuries-long droughts identified by researchers was from approximately 1400 to 1750.  While the study was based on information from a single lake, the researchers argue that the evidence indicates a much larger area was impacted and points to potential vulnerability of an area where a significant human population is at risk.  For more information, see here.
