Cities Harm the Environment Less?

Looking upA study recently published by the International Institute for Environment and Development claims that, per capita, large cities produce less greenhouse gas emissions than rural areas.  This is mainly due to three reasons.  First, increased population density in cities allows for more use of public transportation.  Second, city dwellers live more frequently in apartments and apartments are more efficient to heat than a free-standing house.  Third, while both cities and rural areas produce greenhouse emissions, methane is more harmful than carbon dioxide.  For more information on this study, see here.
