A recent study discovered that some corals can live as long as 4,000 years due to extremely slow growth.  These findings have dramatic implications for the preservation of coral because it could take thousands of years to replace them if removed from an ecosystem.  Two of the oldest coral are  gold coral Gerardia and the black coral Leiopathes both found in the oceans around Hawaii.  For more information on this study, see here.
