Hawaii Institutes Fines for Coral Reef Damage

coral reefTwo years ago Hawaii began issuing fines for damage to coral reefs.  Recently, Hawaii began to significantly increase the size of those fines.  A tour company was charged $390,000 for damage it caused and Hawaii is planning to sue the US Navy for damage done in February.  Coral can take decades and even longer to recover from damage.  Given its important role in providing habitat for sea life and protecting shoreline in storms, coral preservation is extremely important.  Previously, Hawaii focused on educating offenders and charging them with restoration costs.  This method has not been successful, so they have moved to a more punitive method.  Hawaii is home to 84% of all US coral and 15% is in state-controlled waters.  For more information, see redOrbit.
