Northern Forests Threatened

forestWildfires and beetles, such as the mountain pine beetle, are destroying northern forests and scientists suggest the rate of destruction will only increase due to climate change.  As northern climes warm & become drier, trees will grow weaker and pests, sparked by milder winters that allow more larvae to survive, will grow stronger.  As increasing numbers of beetles kill more trees, there will be more dead wood to create hotter & bigger fires.

Even more worrisome is the fact that northern climates are warming faster than global averages.  While average global temperatures increased 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit in the past century, the far north in the Arctic & Sub-Arctic regions experienced warming at twice that rate or greater.  For more information, see redOrbit.
