Potential New Everglades Invader Found
Wildlife officials in Florida are concerned that a new invasive species will soon spread throughout Everglades National Park: the African Rock Python (Python sebae sebae). The African rock python is a high aggressive species and has been known to attack humans. It is significantly more aggressive than another species that has invaded the Everglades, the Burmese Python (Python molurus bivittatus).
What most worries officials is the potential for interbreeding between the two species leading to hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor is the term for the phenomenon where the offspring of two different species is genetically superior to its parents. This superiority can be caused by recessive genes that are expressed in the hybrid, this could include increased aggressiveness. For more information, see Physorg.
