New Solar-Sail Mission
The Planetary Society, a privately funded group, has announced its second attempt at solar-powered spaceflight. Instead of conventional fuels, the solar-sail is powered by streams of photons pushing against a sail in the vacuum of space. The photons have little momentum initially, but they do provide continuous propulsion, which can allow high speeds. While no launch date has been set yet, an attempt may be made by the end of 2010.
