IBM Reveals Cat-Sized Brain

IBM researchers, working with researchers at Stanford University, announced that they have made progress toward simulating the human brain.  These scientists have been able to create a computer that is the equivalent of a cat’s brain.  This simulation of a cat’s cerebral cortex created by IBM requires a supercomputer with 147,456 processors and 143 terabytes of RAM.  Most modern PCs have one or two processors and a few gigs of RAM. Even with all this power, the computer still runs about 100 times slower than an actual cat brain.  This creation is equivalent to approximately 4.5% of a human brain.  Nonetheless, researchers predict that computers equivalent to the human brain are about 10 years from reality.
