Researchers at Stanford University announced a huge leap forward in stem cell research. In less than one week they were able to transform mouse skin cells directly into nerve cells, specifically neurons, without needing to go through a stem cell stage first.  According to the researchers, these neurons are fully functioning and able to perform as brain cells would.  The team is now working to duplicate the feat with human skin cells.  If they are able to, this means that conditions like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s could be studied via a petri dish for the first time.
