Bluefin Tuna Ban Coming Soon?
International trade in endangered Atlantic bluefin tuna is up for discussion at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting scheduled for March 13-25, 2010 in Doha, Qatar. Monaco has proposed including the Atlantic bluefin tuna in CITIES Appendix I. Such inclusion would make trade in wild-caught Atlantic bluefin tuna illegal. To be included in Appendix I, two-thirds of the 175 CITES member countries present at the Doha conference would have to vote in favor of Monaco’s proposal. Under this policy, US commercial fishermen could continue to catch and sell Atlantic bluefin tuna in US waters to US consumers only. The United States is in favor of including Atlantic bluefin in Appendix I.
